On January 30th, hundreds of grad workers rallied in the Cathedral of Learning to formally request that Chancellor Gabel recognize our union.

On January 30th, hundreds of grad workers rallied in the Cathedral of Learning to formally request that Chancellor Gabel recognize our union. A majority of us have already made our decision to unionize. Like so many grad workers across the country and so many of our colleagues and co-workers at Pitt, an overwhelming majority of us are ready to negotiate with the university administration over our stipends, benefits, and working conditions.

On January 31st, we brought our signed union cards to the Pennsylvania Labor Relations Board and filed a petition for a union election.

The labor board will keep our cards confidential, and will set dates for a secret ballot union vote for every TA, TF, GSA, and GSR at Pitt.

Right now, Pitt’s administration decides our pay, benefits, and the policies that determine the hours and conditions of our work.

They change our co-pays and premiums, our parental leave, and our workplace policies without consulting us – and without notice.

We are organizing our union to win the right to negotiate with Pitt’s administration. We know best what we need from the university in order to do the best research and provide the best education that we can.

A majority of us have already taken the first step towards winning the right to negotiate, and signed a union authorization card. It’s not too late to get in touch, learn more, and pledge your support if you haven’t signed yours yet. Contact us!
